I have experience and training in assisting individuals with a multitude of issues, and among my various practice areas life transitions are my specialty. A life transition is any event that represents a major change in one’s daily manner and style of living and that causes stress, anxiety and/or depression.
I provide therapy for adults in Chicago who are navigating life transitions and seeking greater clarity, direction, and emotional grounding during periods of change.
Why Life Transitions Can Feel So Disruptive
These events negatively impact important areas of personal functioning including work, school, social, or family life. Life transitions can be life changes that are considered to be positive in nature, including the birth of a child, a new job, entering or graduating college, beginning a new marriage or relationship, and retirement.
People seek out and usually work very hard to make these changes happen, so it can be difficult to understand why entering these new life phases can cause such distress; this is also why it can be so hard to talk about our difficulties to loved ones during these times, as we may be met with responses such as “I though this is what you’ve been wanting”, or “Things are going great for you-why aren’t you happy?”
When Change Brings Up Deeper Emotional Responses
It is important to remember that these life transitions are by nature stressful and cause anxiety, fear, uncertainty and depression for most people. So if you are experiencing any of these feelings, you are not alone.
Understanding the Deeper Emotional Patterns Behind Transitions
Life transitions often activate deeper emotional patterns that extend beyond the immediate change itself. Experiences from earlier life stages, unresolved losses, or long-standing relational dynamics can shape how individuals respond to periods of transition, sometimes in ways that feel confusing or overwhelming.
Insight-Oriented Therapy for adults in Chicago offers space to explore these underlying dynamics with curiosity and care, supporting change that feels meaningful, integrated, and sustainable over time.
Loss, Grief, and Bereavement
Other more commonly understood life transitions include receiving a terminal or chronic medical diagnosis, divorce, and the loss of a family member or pet. Grief is a particular specialty of mine, and I have worked in several hospice and bereavement programs providing counseling and therapy to terminally ill individuals and their family members both before and after the loss.
During the bereavement period following a loss, unresolved emotions and traumas related to a person’s relationship with the deceased individual as well as other traumas are often triggered. This is an important time to seek therapy to assist in processing emotions so that grief does not become complicated or pathological. Individuals who are engaged in therapy during periods of loss also frequently experience significant breakthroughs, personal growth and progress towards goals due to the intense emotions that are triggered and worked through during these highly sensitive and emotional times.
